I received this conservative Xian email today which showcased an op-ed entitled “Who Will Protect Us Against Invasion?” by Phyllis Schlafly which was hosted at the American Empire Christian Worldview Network, which has a gorgeously designed site.

While I was glancing over her case for Bush ordering the defense of Arizona and leaving some feedback that critiqued Xians involvement in political affairs, I noticed some amazingly accurate targeted ads:

Things wind down as our heroes examine the emotional wreckage of the scene. Notes are compared. Ka-Zar wants to go the New York and kill more Skrulls. Spider-Man nearly swears when he finds out Spider-Woman was a Skrull. And as for Clint, well . . . Clint’s upset that he had to smoke Skrullingbird. In fact, he advocates genocide, albeit with the proper number of symbols in his swears.

Some people thought the fact that Reed Richards was able to create a device which allowed people to see Skrulls was a Deus Ex Machina. It’s not. If Reed Richards was not in the story up until this very moment and showed up with his gizmo that would have been a Deus Ex Machina. Reed has been part of this story since the first issue. His appearance in the story allows for the fact that he has the ability to stop them, which is why the Skrulls captured him and why he was being tortured by them. A lot of hints were made that he may have the key to how this is happening. So those of you who were saying this is a Deus Ex Machina, that’s not the case. You may not like this beat and you may not find it satisfying, which is fine, but know your terms before you get all fancy.

If Jesus is the “Word,”¹ and we don’t want to be sloppy with our language and steer ourselves away from confusing the Word with the Bible, then what ought we call the Bible to emphasize it’s nature as God-breathed scripture?

I don’t like using “the word of God” because it confuses the Bible and Jesus and I want to stay as far away from that as possible.  Using the word “scripture” is what I end up doing, but it just does not carry the weight that I want it to carry.  The closest thing that I can think of for the Bible internally referring to itself (and I recognize the problems with even typing that sentence.) is in 2 Timothy 3:16 where the author refers to writings that are inspired of God. 

The author of 2 Timothy uses γραφή (gra-phay), lit - “a writing” a term that can mean anything from sacred writing, to a painting, to a legal document.  The author equates these “writings” with Θεόπνευστος (theh-o-neus-tahs).  This is a curious word, which only shows up in the NT and LXX here in 2 Tim 3:16 and is a combination of θεο + πνευστος, or God + spirit.  Thus, Θεόπνευστος becomes “inspired by God” or “[having]² the spirit of God.”

So, it Bible and Scripture the best terms to use for the collection of books that we Christians consider to have been inspired by God?  What other options are there?  What do you use?

Where is Kraven when you need him, eh?  ‘Cause Big Foot lives! is dead and verifiable!  We will see tomorrow.

After all, the thing “looks part human and part ape-like” according to the website.  Wait, isn’t ape-like half human looking?  So if you take part human and part apelike and apelike is already part human, then does that mean it is 3/4 human looking?  Consider the following:

Meredith got and award at work this past week.  We turned this award into a nice looking table for our dinning room.  We replaced a six year old table that I did not physically fit at.  Bottom line?  I put it all together yesterday.  ‘Bout 48 woodscrews were involved among many other bolts.  After doing these manually with a undersized screwdriver, I visibly bruised my palm and tore some skin away from my thumbnail. 

Bruising after using a screwdriver?  That’s weaksauce.

Guess what I discovered today?  If you search Hulu for Star Trek, you get taken to CBS’s site which has all of original episodes online. 

I can watch Firefly anytime online.  I can watch the Olympics anytime online.  Now, I can watch Star Trek anytime online.  I am in nerd heaven! 

Right now I am watching “The Enterprise Incident” from season two.  It is cool that this early on we had female captains of ships.
